Curriculum Kit Companion Materials

The Keystone Science Network (KSN) was a major, multi-year collaboration in eastern Pennsylvania of The Franklin Institute Science Museum with the National Science Foundation, Unisys Corporation, and the Commonwealth Department of Education.
KSN developed the following curriculum kit companions that support multiple kits. Each companion includes content background information, enrichment activities, interdisciplinary connections, related student websites, resources from experts in the filed, images, practical advice, and assessment strategies.

Jaco Aerospace Space Education, Thanks to Ms. Lee and her students at Colorado Tutoring for sharing a fantastic resource related to space education!  To start learning more about space, check out the fun links at this site!

Minnesota Learning Loop, created by TIES, is a database of online science resources linked to the Minnesota Academic Standards. Resources can be located by searching by grade level, MN standard, resource type, technology used, or keywords. The resultsare displayed with descriptions and live links to web sources. In addition, some resources have been sorted into the following categories: Student Learning Tools, Teacher Portals and Online Communities.

MarcoPolo: Science NetLinks provides a wealth of resources for K-12 science educators, including standards-based lesson plans indexed according to specific benchmarks and grade ranges. Each lesson is tied to at least one learning goal and uses research-based instructional strategies that support student learning. The lessons are written for the teacher, but include student-ready materials and online interactive student activities and explorations.

Project 2061 Benchmarks Online specifies how students should progress toward science literacy, recommending what they should know and be able to do by the time they reach certain grade levels, including benchmarks for science, mathematics, and technology by the end of grades 2, 5, 8, and 12. The grade demarcations suggest reasonable checkpoints for estimating student progress toward science literacy goals.

The LASER Center is the National Science Resource Center's outreach division, established to guide school districts through the process of exploring, adopting, implementing, and sustaining quality science education reform This Center was started in 1998 with the support of the National Science Foundation and built on a prior decade of NSRC experience in working with school districts in reforming K8 science education programs.

Chicago Math and Science Initiative
is an ambitious plan to transform the teaching and learning of mathematics and science, based in Chicago. CMSI is working to address all school-based issues that impact mathematics and science education, including increased student achievement, high-quality teaching and learning, coherent programs, better-prepared teachers, and more support for math and science.

MDE's High School STEM Initiative has created a website to help students discover firsthand how their participation in certain coursework can lead directly to exciting and rewarding careers. The toolkit is directed toward students, parents, and educators.

The MDE has put together a document called "Internet Resources for Science" which includes links to hundreds of electronic resources organized by grade level and/or type of resource.
Blue Zones and Quest Network, in partnership with the National Geographic Society, helps educators meet national curricular standards in science with free curricula, online content, and supporting materials.

The Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) is a clearinghouse for thousands of high quality lesson guides, curriculum units and other education resources on the Internet. GEM is a project of the U.S. Department of Education, administered by the Information Institute of Syracuse at Syracuse University.

Intel's Project Based Units to Engage Students is a resource that ncludes a collection of exemplary Unit Plans that integrate technology into classroom projects in all disciplines and all grade levels.

Intel's Thinking Tools help you increase student learning with interactive, online tools designed to promote higher-order thinking in any subject. Classroom strategies and teacher-tested project ideas help you get started.

Promethean Planet provides a means of sharing best practices among teachers and offers educators the ability to share effective instructional techniques, learn new teaching methods, and locate resources to enhance classroom learning experiences. Lesson Plans Library offers original lesson plans, all written by teachers for teachers, on a variety of topics including earth science, life science, physical science, weather and technology. Lesson plans are searchable by subject, grade, or both. You can also browse thousands of Teacher's Guides.

PBS TeacherSource provides an easily searchable database of over 3,000 lesson plans, offline activities, and online interactives available for instructional use by educators. Educators can browse within any grade range.
